The weather forecast was great for last Sunday and as we had Dominika staying for the weekend I managed to convince her that it would be a great idea to shoot her on the beach at sunrise. Great idea but when I worked back from the 4.00 am sunrise it meant we had to be up at 2.00am for make-up to be on the beach by 4.00.

It was definitely worth it, the quality of the light was amazing, changing fast from a deep blue through rich oranges and eventually after it came over the horizon into lovely pastel pinks and oranges.

This shot was against the sunrise, handy living on the east coast, I used my trusty pair of Vivitar 285s one either side of Dom with her positioned about 2/3 from the left hand one making the right hand the key. The blue cloth is a pair of curtains we picked up from a charity shop for £1.50!

After the sun had risen the light changed really fast, this was shot with the sun behind Dom’s left shoulder, I used a touch of fill flash from the camera to give a sparkle to her eyes – I think it was -1ev. The strong orange cast is caused by the Fuji S5′s auto white balance and the softness is the flair on the lens. Processing in Photoshop was minimal the origianl file is below the edit.

We are meant to be having a great summer this year in the UK, I’m planning a sunset/sunrise shoot around mid summers day so watch this space.

I am delighted to say that I have had 10 of my images published in Duncan Evans new book on portrait photography from the Photography FAQS series. They even paid me for them!
